It has been over twenty years since I last visited Skiathos! I cannot quite believe it. Skiathos is still just as beautiful as it was then, but definitely more tourists come to Skiathos now then they did back then. I was not diagnosed then, so I was not looking for gluten free in Skiathos, but Greece has plenty of naturally gluten free foods such as grilled fish, meat, vegetables, and let’s not forget Greek salad. Skiathos is a very picturesque island, with it’s cobbled streets and cute little boutique shops as well as a plethora of restaurants and cafes near the port and old port as well as in the town. It is very green with over 60 beautiful beaches and with a population of around 5000, you can definitely feel the closeness of the community.
Breakfast/Brunch
Naval
The perfect spot for breakfast and brunch! Delicious omelettes and fresh fresh juice with a number of vegan and vegetarian options too.
Dinner
Scuna
Scuna had a lot of gluten free options and showed the option symbols on their menu which was very handy!
Akrogiali
One of the best rated restaurants in the area, this was definitely an excellent choice. Greece generally has a lot of naturally gluten free foods and usually on holiday we eat a lot more fish than we do at home. We really enjoyed our meal at Akrogiali. We chose sea bream and sardines with grilled vegetables. This restaurant is super busy so expect some queuing to get in.
Bakaliko
Another firm favourite of ours was Bakaliko. Again, this was in the new port and was busy. We really enjoyed our tasty mixed grill and it was another contender amongst many high rated restaurants.
Snacks and finding items that are gluten free
χωρίς γλουτένη (sounds like horace glouteni) which means without gluten
Gluten free in Skiathos? I always get asked about bread and supermarkets in Greece. In general, wherever in Greece you are staying, if there are supermarkets around, you will most likely find gluten free bits and bobs as Greece has in recent years started to cater a lot more for gluten free.
In Skiathos, opposite the port next to the bus stop, there was a mini supermarket that had gluten free bread, so you can find these things quite easily. But if in doubt, bring some bread and snacks with you just in case.
Where to stay
Gruccio Yellow Studios Skiathos
This studio was so cute and had everything we needed, including a washing machine. We found this studio on Booking.com. It was very clean and well designed for the size, perfect for two travellers for a short stay and was within walking distance to the town centre, but the cobbled streets and steep steps were quite slippery! The owner Stathis was very kind and accommodating and collected us from the port on arrival.
Beaches
Skiathos has a plethora of beautiful beaches. We visited Koukounaries beach quite a few times, as it meant that we would be guaranteed a seat on the bus when we returned as it was the first stop on the return route back to Skiathos town and also because it had everything we needed. The price for two sunloungers was 30 euros and then extra for food and drink, unless you wish to sunbathe further back from the water.
Getting around
Unlike Thassos, Skiathos was very easily accessible by bus. Buses were very frequent (every 10 minutes) and the stops were at a number of beautiful beaches. However, do be warned in the high season the buses will be very busy!
Day trips
We decided to go on a day boat trip to Skopelos. There are a lot of boat trips to Skopelos, many of them highlighting areas for the Mamma Mia film locations, but if you are not interested in that, there are plenty of trips that focus on visiting a number of beautiful beaches that you can’t get to without a boat. You can get tickets directly from the boat companies themselves, which will all be competing for your attention.
