Gluten Free York

gluten free york

The city of York is just two hours away from London by train. If you are looking for gluten free York, then you have come to the right place. York has a plethora of cafes, pubs, restaurants and on the go spots that you are very much spoilt for choice. We visited on a weekend, so it was very busy, particularly in and around the shambles and the market, but that didn’t stop us from having a great time. I would definitely recommend booking places if you can, particularly if you plan on visiting over a weekend. We really loved York, and it is definitely up there with our favourite cities alongside Edinburgh.

Where we stayed

Hotel Indigo, 88-96 Walmgate, York YO1 9TL

We stayed at the Indigo hotel. Situated about a 15 minute walk away from the centre, the hotel Indigo is the perfect place to stay and unwind. It is away from the hustle and bustle in the town, so you will be guaranteed a good nights sleep. We had an extra bonus of balloons and prosecco on arrival as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary.

Places to visit

Jorvik Viking centre

The Jorvik viking centre is a must see attraction in the heart of York’s city centre. 1 hour of fun filled adventure all about the viking settlement and you also get to sit on a ride for about half an hour-yay!

York Castle museum

There is something for everyone here and so much to see. I particularly liked the Victorian street Kirkgate.

Yorkshire museum

This was also a good attraction in York. They had a lot of very interesting exhibitions including the interactive exhibition about life after the ice age-Starr Carr:life after the ice

Fairy Trail

I do believe in fairies, I do, I do! This was so magical and peaceful and a great escape from all the busy crowds. This enchanting trail is run by the local community. There were so many fairy houses, we absolutely loved it.

York minster

This cathedral is beautiful to visit and I would definitely recommend! You can also go up the tower but we had done a lot of sightseeing at this point and my little legs were a little tired!

The shambles

You cannot visit York without taking a wander around the famous shambles. I loved the cobbled streets and shops, it is believed to have been the inspiration behind Diagon Alley.

National railway museum

If you have a few hours until your train home, take a visit to the rail museum. It’s free and very interesting even if you are not a huge fan of trains.

Breakfast/brunch

Hotel Indigo

88-96 Walmgate, York YO1 9TL

We stayed at this hotel so we thought it would be nice to have breakfast before our long day of adventures! I chose the gluten free sausage, hash browns, beans, scrambled egg and toast with a lovely Yorkshire cuppa.

Double Dutch Pancake House

7 Church St, York YO1 8BG

OMG these pancakes are unbelievable! The menu had so many options, both savoury and sweet. I opted for sweet, obviously! I chose banana and blueberry with the dutch sauce and delicious ice cream.

Betty’s Tea Room York

6-8 St. Helen’s Square, YO1 8QP

We queued for about 20 minutes to get in which wasn’t too bad, however I was a little disappointed with the gluten free scones. They were quite brown, and had more of a rock bun consistency. The sandwiches were okay, but not that exciting. The staff were lovely and the atmosphere was great though. The Betty’s shop had some nice little gifts, so  I did purchase a few of their teas.

Dinner

Côte

49 – 51 Low Peter Gate,Y01 7HT

Côte is a modern all day French brasserie chain. We opted for the CÔTE DE BOEUF (22OZ) sharing board with creamed spinach as a side. The food was nice, but it was a shame about the homemade truffle hollandaise sauce as it was very buttery and had little flavour.

Burgsys

9 Walmgate, York YO1 9TX

Tasty burgers, fries and gluten free beer in a relaxed cosy restaurant that has American cowboy decor. What’s not to love?!

Places we wanted to go but ran out of time!

Forest

54 Low Petergate, York YO1 7HZ

This Rustic-style restaurant in the Galtres Lodge Hotel offers traditional cuisine & afternoon tea. We tried to get in on the Saturday night without booking and unfortunately there were no tables available. It was a shame as the menu looked great!

Pavement Vaults

2 Piccadilly,
York YO1 9NU

When I did some searching, lots of people were recommending this place! Burgers, vegan and gluten free options, but they aren’t stated on the menu, so you will have to ask for more info.

There are so many more places to visit but sadly we could not go to all of them! Until next time!
